A Habitat Balance Conversation Starter
Hear me out. Someone walks through your front door and before they see anything, before they notice the furniture, the light, the mess you hid in the bedroom…they smell something and in that one second they know exactly whose home this is.
That’s your signature scent.
My Answer
I didn’t think this question would be hard. I love a lot of smells… fresh coffee, the ocean, a wood shop, rain, lavender, citrus. Ask me on any given day and I’d probably pick a different one, but if I had to commit to one scent that would define my dream home from the moment you walked in, I keep coming back to the same answer.
Morning dew on grass. The kind you only get in places where nature still outnumbers concrete.
It takes me straight back to where I grew up. There’s something about that smell, cool, clean, quietly alive, that feels like the world is starting fresh. Coming home to that every day, or waking up to it drifting through an open window, would set a tone that no candle or diffuser could fake. You’d have to actually earn it. A patch of real grass, a window that faces something green, a morning that lets the outside in.
That’s the dream.
What Might Other People Choose?
Everyone has their own answer. Some people might love the smell of freshly baked bread drifting from the kitchen, or old books in a cozy reading corner. Maybe it’s burning wood from a fireplace, laundry on the line on a summer afternoon, warm cookies, campfire smoke, or a favourite flower from childhood. Your signature scent might reflect your favourite room, your ideal lifestyle, or a memory you want to relive every single day.
Why This Question Actually Matters
Scent is one of the most powerful ways we connect with memory and emotion. Unlike visual style or layout, scent is invisible, but unforgettable. It influences how relaxed we feel, how welcome our guests feel, and what kind of mood a home creates the moment you step inside.
When we think about designing or improving our homes, we focus on materials, layout, and lighting. But scent is part of that too. The materials you choose, the windows you open, the plants you grow, the food you cook, the way you actually live… all of it contributes to your home’s signature smell. It can’t really be faked or bought. It has to be lived.
Choosing a scent isn’t just about candles or diffusers. It’s about designing for the feeling you want to come home to and understanding what that scent is for you specifically. It says a lot about the life you’re trying to build inside your four walls.
So here’s the question.
What would your home smell like and what does that say about the life you want to live in it?
